This is the scene that Bellamy hinted at during her HuffPost Live interview. She said this scene will get us talking. And it definitely did!
Can we talk about how much was revealed in the Mellie & Fitz limo scene? As much as I love Bellamy who is nothing like Mellie, my facial expression matches Fitz in the screen shot above.
Is this how Mellie put Fitz back together after Big Jerry happened to him back in the day? It seemed as though Mellie once again was more concerned about Fitz the president and not Fitz the man in this moment.
That smile Mellie had after Fitz let her in on the hostage situation was quite telling. It was victorious. She may have gotten Fitz’s walls cracked a bit but he still does not trust a soul. Fitz is not the man he was before knowing about Defiance. It has changed the ways he looks at not only Olivia but Cyrus and Mellie.
Here’s one line that stuck out the most for me -
“I’m proud to say that I’ll flush out anyone who comes between me and -“
What do you think Mellie would have said. Me and Fitz? Me and my political dreams?! Remember how Mellie said she’ll dance all over his grave if he ever goes through with the divorce?!
Here’s what Mellie also revealed -
“Cyrus stole the election. He decided and then he got Liv on board, and Verna and me. He got me. It was Cyrus. I’m not trying to excuse what I did. I’m not trying to say that I didn’t have a part. I’m just saying you were right. Shut him out. To Not Trust. I think you’re right because it was Cyrus. You have me. You can trust me.”
So Cyrus was behind Defiance? Remember what Cyrus told James last week - he took his shot. Fitzgerald Grant was his shot.
So when Fitz told her that he wants the hostages to come back alive and Mellie hit him back with….
“I think you should trust your instincts.” and then Fitz replied with…“I need to know if I’m making the right call.”
That was the hurt betrayal from Defiance coming out. Remember how Cyrus told Olivia that he cannot know about Defiance and that he wouldn’t survive knowing and that he would be a changed man for knowing so?
That’s all of what going with Fitz right now…and Mellie cannot deal with this new Fitz. She simply cannot! She’ll throw anyone under the bus at the drop of a dime!
Who did Fitz always count on to tell him as it is? Olivia Pope!
You have to feel some type of way for Fitz. He really is serving out his sentence as president. He really is a prisoner of the one thing he was always striving for to prove he’s nothing like his father BIg Jerry. All of his military and educational background and him being for the People was him wanting to do things the honest way.
He has NO ONE in his corner that he can trust now. He’s all alone making decisions. And this is scary! (I feel he may run for a second term just to point to himself that he can win the honest way!)
He can’t turn to Mellie and Cyrus not only because of Defiance but because he knows their true intentions as they never, ever hid that from him.
Look at what Mellie said to Fitz…
You are the President. Any call you make is right. And if it doesn’t work out, we’ll figure out what the next step is. We can do this. It’s going to be alright.
Mellie did not tell Fitz that she loves him (but should she have to do so) nor did she tell him that she was frustrated with him changing. She thought the change was because of Olivia Pope not because of the personal way he took Defiance.
Bottom line: Sorry but not sorry for the long winded analysis! I got nothing more to say about Mellie and Fitz. Their relationship has so many layers of What The Huck moments. Only these two can get it because I got nothing! Here’s the thing Mellie and Fitz are both unafraid to show each other who they really are. I also think Fitz has looked at being with Mellie as retribution for what he did to Verna. I also believe Mellie doesn’t know what she’ll do without Fitz. She enjoys being First Lady more than anything in the world. But you got to love to hate Mellie because Bellamy plays her so well! Just my opinion!
